we move through bouncy electro with big beats and upbeat keyboard washes to dark, guitar-laden soundscapes that induce as much panic as they do adulation. the full album has a well developed flow that enables the listener to enjoy the record as a sustained and intriguing piece that benefits from repeated listens, preferably without other distractions to tear you away from the alternate plane on which Trent’s darkly absorbing music exists. you’ll not regret spending an hour or two in the company of this amazing music.—phil

i haven’t seen this movie, don’t really listen to soundtracks, and am not a fan of either of these people (as far as i know), but i saw someone praise this very highly so i decided to give it a try.

i’m very, very glad i did. i listened to it twice last night while i composed a reply to a pal, musing about the nature of a soul, the potential of afterlife/lives, and what makes an individual including the role of identity. it was wonderful.

the insyderz: motor city ska

Friends Joe Yerke and Nate Sjogren started up The Insyderz, an aggressive ska band from Detroit, Michigan. In 1997, Motor City Ska introduced the six-piece band as a true addition in Christian ska. These guys came into the picture quickly when there was barely any ska in the Christian market. They entered the scene with an obvious faith, energy and passion. You’ll notice on this record that almost every track is upbeat and has a very raw brass sound. The first track, “Carnival,” opens up with some off-beat guitar and then picks up with an extremely jumpy, yet engaging, beat. The vocals really catch your attention if you’ve never listened to these guys before too – in a good way, with Yerke’s deeper, more gravelly vocal delivery—patrick anderson

i saw this band at my church when i was in 6th grade. it was my first concert and i was too self-conscious to skank.

mars hill bible church: to the world

mind you, this is the rob bell church in grandville, michigan—not the mark driscoll church in seattle, washington.

this is a cd the worship team put out in 2004. some or all of the money was used so the youth group kids could go to camp. some of these songs are my favorite christmas songs, like ‘angels we have heard on high’ with beatboxing and the silent night instrumental. i think my favorite is their version of ‘what child is this’.

and if you’re nervous, only one of the songs (joy to the world) is a live recording and i was there.

this album was not christian music, except for maybe two songs..ok sounding ska jazzy type sound-but kinda weird lyrics..yeah wouldn’t reccomend it if you want a christian album yall.—jacki

This is a fun CD, with fun songs and good music. So I was very disappointed in the content. There were several words to be found on this album that were totally unneeded, such as “suck”. Aside from that, several of the songs seemed to glorify violence, albeit humorously, and there were really only maybe four songs on here that you could distingish as Christian. “The Devil Is Bad,” the single that did so well on Christian hit radio, really sets the tone for this album – flippant, with seemingly very little thought. If you want a spiritual uplifting, go somewhere else.—a customer

i like christian music, but only if it pisses off christians.

have some silly swing-ska. but only if you don’t want hear songs about jesus.

With its seventh album Come On Now Social, the Indigo Girls continues its movement away from its early folk beginnings towards all-out rock ‘n‘ roll. Augmented by Sinead O’Connor’s band, the duo pushes songs like Go with a raging, Neil Young-like fury. This song opens the album by combining the torrential onslaught of electric guitar with a pulsating bass line that forcefully demands attention. Once caught in the maelstrom, the group shifts gears into the track’s transcendent, uplifting bridge, as if it was urging its fans to break the chains holding them in place. It’s a shocking beginning, indeed, especially for those who haven’t kept pace with the Indigo Girls over the course of its career. Those who checked out after its debut will no doubt be left standing with mouths agape, wondering if this could possibly be the same duo that delivered Closer to Fine. Have no fear, because the Indigo Girls does return to its folk roots from time to time throughout Come On Now Social. Songs like the moving Soon Be to Nothing, the Band-inspired Gone Again (with guests Garth Hudson on accordion and Rick Danko on bass), and the devilishly haunting Sister all draw from the music of the duo’s past and showcase their glorious harmonies.—john metzger

it took me a long time to not regret buying this album. it’s weird. i love it now, though, for all the reasons i disliked it.

A two-disc set, Dream is the third live release in the Girls discography (preceded by 1991′s Back On the Bus, Y’all and 1995′s 1200 Curfews). While that may seem like at least one live album too many, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been so prolific since the release of the last one that there’s barely any overlap at all.—jason hare

there’s no shortage of indigo girls bootlegs, but it’s nice to have good recordings.

there are a bunch of their songs that i didn’t really like until i heard them live. as much as i love their studio albums, their songs make more sense and are absolutely jaw-dropping when done live. honestly, i thought i couldn’t love the band any more. i was afraid that seeing them live would disappoint me and ruin my romanticization of them. needless to say, this is not what happened.

honestly, if you’ve never been able to care about this band, listen to 1200 curfews. it might click for you.
